Bathroom Renovations in Ranui

The corner shower takes up one corner of the bathroom. Its glass front is angled across the corner, so it uses less floor than a square shower of the same depth and leaves more space in front of the toilet and the vanity.

The toilet stands beside the shower glass. The vanity hangs on the wall under a rectangular mirror, and the chrome ladder rail is fixed to the tiles close by.

Two timber windows bring in daylight. One is a tall sash window. The other has a deep painted sill with a chrome rail fixed to the tiles below it.

The wall tiles are long white gloss rectangles laid on their side. They run from the floor to the ceiling cornice on every wall, inside and outside the shower, so no painted wall is left to take steam.

Charcoal grout outlines every tile and turns a plain white wall into a clean grid. Dark grout also hides the marks that white grout shows in a busy family bathroom.

The floor is a white hexagon mosaic with the same charcoal grout. Small mosaic tiles follow the fall of a shower floor better than large tiles, so one mosaic covers the bathroom floor and the shower floor with no change of tile at the glass.

Dark grout shows any tile that sits out of line. The walls must be flat and square before the tiler starts, and in an older home that can mean new wall linings first.

Fixed glass panels and a hinged glass door form the angled front of the shower. Chrome clamps hold the glass to the tiles, and a chrome D-shaped handle opens the door.

A round rain shower head on a chrome wall arm sits above the middle of the shower floor. The mixer is a square chrome plate with a single lever, set into the tiled wall.

A recessed niche in the shower wall is lined with the white hexagon mosaic and finished with a slim tile trim. It keeps bottles off the floor and out of the way of the door.

Under the tiles, the shower floor sits on a waterproofing membrane and falls to a square chrome grate. A low tiled upstand under the glass keeps water inside the shower.
