Bathroom Renovations in Mount Eden
Alchemy Bathroom Renovations Auckland renovated this bathroom in a Mount Eden character home, with timber sash windows and a panelled door. A white clawfoot bath sits under a frosted sash window. A walk-in shower stands behind a fixed glass panel, next to a wall-hung oak-look vanity and a round backlit mirror. Grey stone-look tiles cover the floor and run to waist height around the room. White tiles laid in vertical stacks rise to the ceiling behind the vanity and inside the shower. Every fitting is matte black. Nick McKelvie, a Licensed Building Practitioner (BP1021390) with 1,200+ bathroom renovations behind him, ran the job.
The room keeps the look of an older Auckland home and works like a new one. This job is part of our villa and character home bathroom renovations. For bathroom renovations in Mount Eden, call 09 884 6535 to book a free site visit and a written quote.

The finished room
A Character Home Bathroom Renovation in Mount Eden
The panelled door opens onto the shower. The shower floor sits one step above the bathroom floor and drains to a square grate. A fixed glass panel with a slim black edge closes one side, and the other side stays open, so there is no door to swing or track to clean.
Past the shower, the vanity and the round mirror share the white tiled wall. The toilet stands against the grey tiles on the next wall, with its cistern hidden inside the wall behind a black flush plate.
The clawfoot bath sits under the sash window at the end of the room. A recessed niche in the grey tiles beside it keeps bath items within reach.

The tiling plan
Two Tiles and a Waist-Height Line in a Mount Eden Bathroom
The floor uses large-format grey porcelain tiles with a soft white vein, like pale stone. The same tiles run up the walls to about waist height and finish under a slim grey edge trim. Painted wall runs from the trim to the ceiling.
Behind the vanity and inside the shower, the tiles change. White rectangular tiles are laid on end in straight vertical stacks and run to the ceiling. The vertical lines draw the eye up and make the room feel taller.
A straight stack shows every tile edge, so the walls behind it must be flat and plumb. In an older home, that can mean new wall linings before the tiler starts.

The fittings
The Bath, Vanity and Toilet in the Mount Eden Bathroom
Three pieces set the style of this room. Each one pairs a classic shape with a clean, modern fitting.

Bath
Clawfoot Bath Under the Sash Window
A white roll-top bath stands on four black claw feet under a frosted sash window. The window gives privacy and daylight. The bath stands clear of the walls, so the grey floor tiles run under it and the room reads larger.

Vanity
Wall-Hung Vanity and Backlit Mirror
An oak-look vanity with two deep drawers hangs off the floor under a white top. An oval vessel basin sits on the top, filled by a matte black wall spout with a separate black mixer. A round mirror with a warm LED backlight hangs above it.

Toilet
Back-to-Wall Toilet With In-Wall Cistern
A white pan sits tight against the tiles, with the cistern built into the wall. Only a black rectangular flush plate shows. A matte black roll holder is fixed to the tiles beside it.
The shower and storage
How the Walk-In Shower in This Mount Eden Bathroom Works
The shower has a round overhead rain head and a hand shower on one matte black rail, with a round black mixer beside it. The hand shower lifts off for rinsing the walls.
A long recessed niche sits in the white tiles on the back wall of the shower, lined with the same tiles and finished with a slim metal trim. A second niche, lined in grey tiles, sits in the wall beside the bath. Both keep bottles off the floor and off the bath rim.
Under the tiles, the shower floor and walls sit on a waterproofing membrane, and the raised base keeps water inside the shower. Alchemy backs its waterproofing with a 15-year guarantee.

Mount Eden homes at the 2023 Census
Bathroom Renovations for Mount Eden Homes
The five Mount Eden census areas (North, North East, East, South and West) held 14,862 residents in 5,217 occupied homes at the 2023 Census.
23.2%
of homes reported damp, always or sometimes
19.3%
of homes had mould larger than an A4 sheet
52.3%
of homes were owned by the household or a family trust
Mount Eden homes report more damp than homes in newer suburbs. 23.2% reported damp, against 12.3% in Albany. In Mount Eden North the figure was 28.7%. Older timber homes with single-glazed sash windows lose heat fast, and a bathroom is where the steam condenses first.
Close to half of Mount Eden homes are not owned by the people living in them. A rental bathroom with a bath or shower needs an extractor fan that vents outside. The healthy homes ventilation standard sets a fan diameter of at least 120 mm, including ducting, and an extraction rate of at least 25 litres per second. Nick plans the fan and its duct run at the same time as the tiles.

What Changes the Cost of Bathroom Renovations in Mount Eden
Every Mount Eden bathroom is priced in writing after a free site visit. These five choices move the price most in a room like this one. Character homes are where hidden work shows up. Nick’s written quote lists every trade and every fixture, the same format our Auckland bathroom renovation contractors use on every job, so a lining or a floor fix is priced before work starts.
Clawfoot bath
A freestanding bath needs its waste and water set through the floor in the right spot, and a level floor under all four feet.
Tile layout
A vertical straight stack needs flat, plumb walls. Tiling to waist height outside the shower uses less tile than tiling every wall to the ceiling.
In-wall cistern
A hidden cistern needs a framed wall cavity and costs more than a toilet with a visible cistern.
Black tapware
Matte black mixers, rails and flush plates cost a little more than chrome. All of them should come from one range so the black matches.
Older homes
Character homes often need new wall linings or floor levelling before tiling. Nick checks for this at the site visit and includes it in the written quote.
